NGK: Nandha Gopalan Kumaran is a 2019 Tamil political thriller movie, directed by Selvaraghavan, and starred Suriya in the titular role. The other casts include Sai Pallavi, Rakul Preet Singh, Devaraj, Ponvannan and Bala Singh. Yuvan Shankar Raja handles the music department, whereas Sivakumar Vijayan and Praveen K.L. handle the cinematography and editing department respectively.

Why "NGK"?

* A movie from Selvaraghavan, after 6 years of his last release, Irandaam Ulagam (2013).

* Suriya - Selvaraghavan combination, for the first time.

* Selvaraghavan and Yuvan combo, after Pudhupettai (2006).

Official Teaser:

Plot:

Nandha Gopalan Kumaran, an MNC employee-turned-organic farmer, who's also a fanatic about the nation, forced to join into politics, and thus deals a lot of chaos and issues, around him.

Official Trailer:

+ves and -ves:

+ Suriya.
+ Other casts like Rajkumar, Ilavarsu, and Bala Singh.
+ Direction.
+ Music Department.

- Editing.
- Half baked characters.
- An unnecessary romantic duet and its choreography.

Performances:

* Suriya as Nandha Gopalan Kumaran could easily say, as one of his career-best performance. He portrays the role with ease, and effortlessly and portrays many shades of a person, from the normal state to the psychic-fanatic state.

* Sai Pallavi as Geetha Kumari, did an above-average performance. At some scenes, her acting was extreme and eccentric, which was unnecessary.

* Rakul Preet Singh as Vanathi, a political analyst did an okayish performance. Even though her dialogues were well lip-synced, but nothing more or less to portray.

* Other performances from Bala Singh, Ilavarasu, Ponvannan, and Rajkumar was good.

A Still from the film.

Technical Aspects

* Written and Directed by Selvaraghavan. First things first, kudos to him to utilize Suriya, as an "actor" again. He made enough space to utilize the acting potentials of Suriya, in this movie. Usually, when you watch his previous works, you get to know the pure touch of a brilliant filmmaker (except Irandaam Ulagam), and his works like Pudhupettai and Aayirathil Oruvan, are still considered to be one of the best movies from Tamil Cinema. Here, in NGK, it was kinda half-baked, neither you can't say it's a work of Selvaraghavan nor a Suriya-oriented movie. The movie had a proper build up pre-Interval, but the buildup could not maintain, post-Interval. The screenplay was weak on the post Interval scenes, but he managed to gave a proper work. The characterisation of female leads was too, half-baked especially Rakul Preet Singh's Vanathi. The dialogues were brilliant, especially the climax monologue, the sarcastic conversation between two leaders, and the meeting with the leader and political analyst. There are few 'Selvaraghavan brilliance' in this movie, like the lightings and the frames, a couple of brilliant moments and some inner meanings, which were the major strength for the film, which makes NGK, a watchable content. The politics thing in this movie was moreover shown in a realistic setup, other than the regular commercial 'Messiah' heroes, and could easily say as one of the better Tamil political movies in recent times.

* Music and Background Score by Yuvan Shankar Raja did a good job in this film. He was the next backbone of this movie, especially the background score. Out of four songs, except "Anbe Peranbe", rest of the songs justified the premise of the movie. The composition of "Anbe Peranbe" is good, but it was misplaced and felt kinda speed breaker for the movie.

* DoP by Sivakumar Vijayan, did justice to the movie but was ordinary, whereas the editing by Praveen K. L. was average. Some abrupt rush to the next scenes and few transitions were a letdown for the movie.

* Other technical departments like Action, DI, and Sound Effects were good and did justice to the movie.

Final Verdict: NGK is half-baked, yet a decent political thriller movie from Selvaraghavan, but seems to be missing the director's touch.
