Mersal (Lightning in English) is 2017 highly anticipated Tamil Action Drama movie directed by Atlee and starring Ilayathalapathy Vijay, S J Surya, Nitya Menen, Samantha, Kajal Agarwal, Vadivelu, Sathyaraj, Hareesh Paredi in prominent roles. The movie is bankrolled by Thendral Studios with a huge budget of ₹150cr. The music is done by legend A R Rahman, background music by A R Rahman himself and Qutub-E-Kripa and newcomer G K Vishnu and Ruben did the cinematography and editing as well. The main highlight of this movie is the triple action of Thalapathy. This movie faced controversy for its dialogues about the drawbacks of GST in India.

Plot:
* Dr. Maran was arrested by the police officers for the abduction of few prominent people whose related to medical field. He's taken to interrogation and was questioned of his motive, he began to narrate his past.

Performance:
* Vijay as Dr. Maran, Vetri and Vetrimaran aka Thalapathy did a fine job. Vetrimaran was the central attraction of this whole movie. Usually most movies of Vijay are more prone to his mass elements for his fans, but in this movie you can witness Vijay as an actor after Kaththi (2014). He was energetic and charming in all his three roles and synced well with the three heroines of the movie. His mass appeal was well utilized in this movie and there are many moments for his fans to enjoy in theatres.

* S J Surya as Daniel Arokiyaraj, the main antagonist did his part well. The antagonist which we witnessed in Spyder (Tamil-Telugu bilingual movie) wasn't seen in this movie, he made an impact with the audience through his role, though he had few scenes. His flawless acting and the cunning antagonism took the movie into the next level. His dialogues with Thalapathy and the prior mention about normal delivery was one of the best scenes of the film.

* Nitya Menen as Aishwarya Vetrimaran was the bold and pretty role she enacted in this movie. Her portions with Vijay was good. She had more screen space than other two main actresses in this movie.

* Kajal Agarwal and Samantha as Dr. Pallavi (Vetri's love interest) and Tara (Maran's love interest) was moreover like an extended cameo appearances or regular Indian heroines. They did their roles well, appeared in less than six scenes and danced with the hero. That's it.

* Other actors did their finest performance especially Sathyaraj (guest appearance) as the police officer and Vadivelu as the comedian.

Technical Aspects:
* Atlee's direction was the one of the best asset of this movie. He made this movie into a standard and fresh treatment even though the movie is a paisa vasool mass entertainer. Each dose of genres whether it's action or drama or romance or revenge was placed well. The growth of a standard director can be evidently seen in the growth of Atlee from his debut movie Raja Rani, then Theri (his first collaboration with Vijay) and his last venture Mersal. He has a great sense of visualization and richness throughout the movie even in songs as well.

* Script was done by Atlee and K V Vijayendra Prasad (scriptwriter of Bahubali franchise). The movie concentrated on the mass appeals as well as storyline too. The main theme of this movie was about the corruption in medical field and how people gets fooled easily and the culprits utilises their money as their wish. Since this movie was based on medical corruption, few disturbing scenes was there, that's why the movie was certified with U/A. The screenplay was racy in first part which showcased more standard and classy version and the second half was a bit lagging but was fine. Most mass scenes were seen on the second half. The interval block was one of the best and mass scenes of this movie. The dialogues were crisp and apt for the movie.

*Music by A R Rahman did a fine job. When Neethane song was the best song of this album, Mersal Arasan was the only average song of this album but that song was a fiesta for Vijay fans. Aalaporan Tamizha and Maacho was better. The background music by A R Rahman himself and Qutub-E-Kripa did an average job. The background score used in some parts didn't worked out well. And there wasn't any tunes that could spoil the movie.

* DoP by G K Vishnu was the next best element of this movie. He showcased the richness of the visuals of this movie more classy. One who watch this movie won't feel any amateurish frames. He did a top-notch job especially in "Aalaporan Tamizha" song.

* Editing by Ruben did a fabulous work. The cuts were apt for the movie and transitions worked well for this movie which made viewers more entertained. His cuts were efficient as it doesn't seemed like a regular commercial pot boiler.

* Production Design by T. Muthuraj did a great job. His ideas and set designs are being improving after every movie. The 90's set was the major highlight of this movie.

* Stunts by Anal Arasu was good. There were more than 12 actions blocks in this movie and did his work apt for the movie which made a fiesta for the fans of Vijay.

* Other departments including VFX, Sound Designing, etc. did their parts well.

Final Word: Mersal is a Diwali entertainer which you can enjoy completely with your family and a fiesta for Thalapathy fans too.
