Disclaimer: This list is created as I felt these 10 movies are worth watching and could be recommended as well. The movies in the list are updated till the movies released November 29th as I didn't get the time to watch movies in December. Hope you would like those movies and if you have any comments or add any other movies, do post it in the comment box. The ranking will be according to the Indian release dates of these films.
Mercury
Release Date: 13th April
Director: Karthik Subbaraj
Why?
It's been more than 30 years since we witnessed a silent film after Pushpaka Vimanam alias Pushpak (1987), and Mercury is here, as to give a visual experience without any dialogues. The green tone, the horror, and the visual impact made a visual experience in theatres even though the story was just thin-layered one. The movie technically and visually was good, especially the performance of Prabhudheva and Indhuja, and that's a guarantee from a good filmmaker like Karthik Subbaraj, his previous works (Pizza, Jigarthanda and Iraivi) are the best examples. Surely waiting for Petta, his upcoming Tamil film with Rajinikanth, that's gonna release on January 2019.

Kaala
Release Date: 07th June
Director: Pa. Ranjith
Why?
When the actor-director combo from Kabali was back, the general audience didn't had any hope for the film till it's teaser and first look posters arrived. The major highlight of this film was you can see Rajinikanth as Kaala, a Tamil speaking aged gangster from Dharavi slum but more as a human-being than a larger-than-life characterisation and Hari Dada, played by Nana Patekar who wanted every single dust of Mumbai, projected him as a large person and a perfect competition for Kaala. And at the end of the film, it's not a common defeat for the antagonist that you see in usual mainstream movies. It's treatment is different.

Why?
It's not just because of another Nayanthara movie. The characterisation of Anjali Vikramadithyan and Rudhra was so neat and clean that made one of the most memorable movies of this year.

U-Turn
Release Date: 13th September
Director: Pawan Kumar
Why?
Kannada Filmmaker, Pawan Kumar who made rave movies like Lucia and U-Turn made his Tamil debut by remaking one of his directorial into bilingual. Starring Samantha as the lead, the movie was interesting with unfamiliar premises and twists in the film that made the film itself a memorable watch. If you watched it's original version before viewing this film, then it's the best remake version of the original. The main highlight of this film was it's casting from both the versions.

Chekka Chivantha Vaanam
Release Date: 27th September
Director: Mani Ratnam
Why?
When everyone judged that it's the end of the era of Mani Ratnam, here he comes like a boss with Chekka Chivantha Vaanam. A multi-starrer film (Arvind Swamy, Arun Vijay, STR and Vijay Sethupathy) giving importance to each and every star is a big thing, and that too without compromising from the script. Even though, the film is more concentrated in a commercial way, there are some key scenes that had a Mani Ratnam mark. That makes this movie the best on his filmography after Raavanan (2010).

Director: Mari Selvaraj
Why?
Produced by the director of Kaala, Pa. Ranjith, the movie tells about the story of Kathir, a law student who originates from lower caste section, loves a girl who's from higher caste and how his life changes. We have seen this subject in many movies, but the movie portrayed the plot in more raw and realistic manner, that strikes the emotional chord of the audience. We can understand more clearly after watching this film that people still looks caste and makes himself superior if he/she belongs to higher caste and suppress the lower ones even after Independence of our country.

Why?
The movie has became the talk of the town, talk of the other neighboring states was not because of its marketing strategy, it's because every individual can relate to Ram and Jaanu, the central characters of this film, played by Vijay Sethupathy and Trisha Krishnan. Ratsasan
Release Date: 05th October
Director: Ramkumar
Why?
The main talk of the town and other neighboring states after 96 movie, was Ratsasan. A brilliantly crafted film, starred Vishnu Vishal who wants to be a filmmaker, finally becomes a cop and comes across a case that's relatable to his own written script. The crisp movie with the running time of almost 3 hours doesn't give us any amount of time to think but make us travel along the movie, with the well-written screenplay, good direction and technical support and background scores. The actors gave their best performance and a memorable Psycho antagonist, thus it's the best movie of this year from our country. Do watch it.

Vada Chennai
Release Date: 17th October
Director: Vetrimaran
Why?
Being it's first one from the upcoming trilogy, Vada Chennai deals about the changes of Northern side of Chennai from 80s to present and it's socio-political changeovers through a central character named Anbu, a national carom board player (played by Dhanush) whose life changes because of few characters. The non-linear narrated movie showcases brilliant performances and a good potential to be a modern-classic or kinda classic trilogy like The GodFather Series. The performances of director Ameer and Andrea Jeremiah are so memorable and key important of this film. The technically brilliant movie was also good with detailing with the real incidents and the mix match of reel characters, like what you saw in the Netflix web-series, Sacred Games. Eagerly waiting for it's other two parts to know more about Vada Chennai.
