Vaaranam Aayiram (2008).

Retrospection of #VaaranamAayiram

14.11.2008 was the date when this gem was released. To be honest, this was one such movie that ain't 'just a random movie' on my hard disk, but one among the movies that still rely on my heart, very closely. The movie is none other than Vaaranam Aayiram, a Tamil movie directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon. This was one of the movies that engage me and gave more focus on movies, in short terms, a movie maniac. A decade has passed, so I wanna write something about the movie because this isn't just a movie for me. A fascinating masterpiece or a visual diary that beautifully narrates the relationship of a father and a son, and their surroundings too. Before getting into the real depth, let me confess that I haven't watched this 'masterpiece' in theatres, but watched it later on a pirated HD copy, after four years, in 2012 (because there wasn't a theatre in Saudi Arabia until 2019). At that time, the only persuasion to watch a movie was the song, "Nenjukkul Peidhidum" from this movie (which is beautifully composed by Harris Jayaraj and sung by veteran singer Hariharan), because else nowhere I got to know about the movie.

This movie was very new to me, at that point of time, because it had a beautiful portrayal of a father-son relation, the journey of the son and the loves that he meets, the moment of self-discovery, the so-called transformation that required in one's life, until one fine day, his father passes away. It's clearly the story of a gene, a whole lifetime. The movie starts with the song, "Hai Apna Dil Toh Awara"(which sung by the son with his guitar, where the title credits pop up), it drives into the present day of both the father (Krishnan) and the son (Suriya), both played by actor Suriya, and then takes you into the flashback where his mom Malathi (Simran) narrates to the grown-up Suriya, that how they met, and how their life was, at present, through second-person narration. And from that point onwards, you get indulge into an emotional roller-coaster ride of the child Suriya and how he studies his father Krishnan, and how he wanna be a replica of his dad.

Suriya (actor) in the double role, a still from the film.

One of my favourite scenes was the train scene, where Suriya meets Meghna. Oh dear God, to be frank, that is one of my fantasies to meet my soulmate at a similar scenario. Jokes apart, the impulse or vibe he gets, when he meets Meghna, for the first time, and where she discovers it. Then the moment he strikes a chord of "En Iniya Pon Nilave" song of maestro Ilayaraja and then comes up my favourite song, "Nenjukkul Peidhidum", those 10-15 minutes is still, a gem for me, an unforgettable scene.

This movie also succeeds in narrating the importance of overcoming losses, and the requirement of self-discovery. That's the moment where Suriya discovers, what he wants to be in his life. On his every step that he took, he got the urges as well as corrections from his dad immensely, that helped himself to shape as a good human being. And then, it makes you emotional enough to miss your parents, especially your dad enough.

I don't wanna spoil more, regarding the film. It's wonderfully crafted by GVM and a mesmerizing performance from Suriya and other actors. I can't imagine any other versions of Vaaranam Aayiram in any other language, because it's a one-time wonder, that happened in cinemas, for the crew technicians and for the viewers too. I can say proud enough that how did Gautham Vasudev Menon make my childhood and teenage awesome, with a bunch of his directorial including Vaaranam Aayiram. At present, eleven years have passed, and even now, I watch this movie in any mood, because at the end of the day, it comforts and relaxes your emotion in a positive way. I recommend you, people, to watch this movie from any possible source because I guess it isn't available in any leading streaming platforms. And I have to convey two matters to GVM before concluding this note. Firstly, please make this movie available on any leading online streaming platform and lastly, damn waiting for Enai Noki Paayum Thotta and Dhruva Natchathiram.
